5 Pairs of Prepositional Idioms
5 Pairs of Prepositional Idioms 5 Pairs of Prepositional Idioms 5 Pairs of Prepositional Idioms By Mark Nichol A prepositional phrase is called that, and not a noun-and-preposition phrase or the like, for a good reason: The preposition determines the meaning. Here are five examples of pairs of prepositional phrases that are distinct in meaning because of the preposition used. 1. At Ease/with Ease In addition to being a military command to prompt a parade formation to adopt a degree of relaxation, ââ¬Å"at easeâ⬠refers to a state of relaxation: ââ¬Å"He stood at ease while waiting his turn.â⬠ââ¬Å"With easeâ⬠also modifies an action, but it is used to refer to a sense of effortlessness in such statements as ââ¬Å"She completed the gymnastics routine with ease.â⬠2. At the End/in the End ââ¬Å"At the endâ⬠is not used on its own as an idiom, but it appears in such expressions as ââ¬Å"at the end of the dayâ⬠(to mean ââ¬Å"ultimatelyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"as it turned outâ⬠) and ââ¬Å"at the end of (oneââ¬â¢s) ropeâ⬠or ââ¬Å"tetherâ⬠to mean ââ¬Å"pushed to (oneââ¬â¢s) limits.â⬠ââ¬Å"In the end,â⬠by itself, has the same senses as ââ¬Å"at the end of the day.â⬠3. In Favor of/in Favor With To be in favor of is to approve of something. To be in favor with a person or a group is to have their approval or support. 4. By Name/in Name ââ¬Å"By nameâ⬠is used in such constructions as ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know him by nameâ⬠meaning that the person in question is known by the speaker or writer on some other basis, as by sight. (The speaker or writer recognizes the person by his appearance, for example, but doesnââ¬â¢t know his name.) Byname is a synonym for nickname. ââ¬Å"In nameâ⬠appears in the phrase ââ¬Å"in name only,â⬠meaning ââ¬Å"not actuallyâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Smith is the leader in name only; Jones actually runs everythingâ⬠). ââ¬Å"In (someoneââ¬â¢s) nameâ⬠means ââ¬Å"as (someoneââ¬â¢s) propertyâ⬠(ââ¬Å"The house is in my nameâ⬠) or ââ¬Å"on (someoneââ¬â¢s) behalfâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Stop! In the name of the law!â⬠) 5. On Time/in Time ââ¬Å"On timeâ⬠means ââ¬Å"punctual.â⬠ââ¬Å"In timeâ⬠means ââ¬Å"within a determined time.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
